A common sight in the British hedgerows. These berries have a slightly bitter skin, like some apples, and the flesh is slightly sweet. They can be eaten raw, but it is best to spit out the seeds. The berries can also be made into tea, wine, jams and jellies. A popular use among foragers is to make hawthorn ketchup which tastes a bit like barbecue sauce. Most online recipes use 500g berries.
These berries contain polyphenols which are antioxidants. They have been used in the past to treat high blood pressure and heart conditions. Their high fibre content helps with digestion. They also have anti-inflammatory properties.
